Cold War Timeline Project for American History

What was the Cold War?

The Cold War was an era of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union that lasted for decades. It began in 1945 when World War II ended. After the war, the two superpowers became enemies.

The Cold War was a period of intense rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. Both sides had nuclear weapons and the threat of using them was very real.

In the early 1950s, the United States and Soviet Union were on the brink of nuclear war.

Cold War Timeline Project

Have students look at the events that led up to the Cuban Missile Crisis and finish off with the events that led to the fall of the Soviet Union for their timeline project.

This project will give students the chance to learn about the history of the Cold War and how it affected people on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

You can have students create a physical or digital timeline of the main events of the Cold War.

Some of the major events of the Cold War that students can include on their timeline are:

  • The Truman Doctrine
  • The Berlin Airlift
  • The Vietnam War
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis
  • The “Bay of Pigs” Invasion
