I’m not teaching a Geography class, so do I really need to review geography skills with my students? The answer is YES! Every social studies class involves analyzing maps of some sort, whether it’s looking at election maps for Government class or maps of ancient empires for World History class.
We can’t expect students to know how to read and analyze a map, so it’s important that we teach and review basic geography and map skills to our students.
Free Jeopardy Game to Review Geography Skills
If you need an activity to review geography skills with your social studies classes, you can grab my FREE jeopardy game here.
I recommend every social studies teacher spend at least one class to review geography skills with their students. This practice will be very helpful for when they take their state assessment or end of year assessment.
With my free jeopardy game, you’ll review geography skills with your students such as:
- Identifying the 7 continents
- Practicing directions
- Identifying parts of a map – like scale and a compass rose
- Longitude vs Latitude
Connecting Geography Skills to Your Class
Once you review basic geography skills, then you can teach students specific map and geography skills for the class you are teaching.
If you are teaching US History part 1, from Exploration through Civil War and Reconstruction, you could have students look at Revolutionary War maps for different battles or a map of locations of Native American tribes.
