Build a Connection with Students

The Quick 2 for 10 Intervention

How To Build a Genuine Connection With Your Student

If you haven’t heard of the 2 for 10 intervention, read this for a quick intervention idea to build a relationship with a student that you are struggling to connect with.

The 2 for 10 Intervention:

Choose one student that you want to build a relationship with. Make sure you are speaking with the student by themself, not in a group. Talk with them about anything non-academic that interests them (basketball, movies, fashion…) for 2 consecutive minutes each day. Do this for 10 school days in a row & you should be able to build a relationship!

As the days pass, try to have the student talk more and you take the role of an active listener. Have some questions prepared to keep the conversation flowing if necessary. Example: What movie should I watch this weekend? Why do you recommend it?

After the 10 Days:

Once the 10 days have passed, make sure that you still make time to connect with your student & maintain the relationship that you’ve built.

Having a connection with your student will decrease behavioral problems with this student in your classroom. It will also help the student to trust you.

Once you complete this intervention with your student, you can try it with another student!
