5 Chinese New Year Activities for the Classroom

Chinese New Year is a wonderful time to learn about another culture and celebrate with your students. Here are some great Chinese New Year activities to do in the classroom to celebrate!

5 Chinese New Year Activities

  1. Teach students about their zodiac sign! If you want a no-prep activity, grab this Chinese New Year packet
    • Students will read about Chinese New Year traditions and complete activities about their zodiac sign. This packet has been adapted to support all students. This is original content and a fun read about Chinese New Year.

  2. Decorate red lanterns! Lanterns are traditionally hung up during Chinese New Year
    • Give each student a red piece of construction paper and some crayons or markers. Encourage them to be creative and add as many details as they’d like. Once they’re finished, hang their lanterns up around the room.
  3. Make dumplings! Dumplings are a traditional food eaten during Chinese New Year.
    • Choose a simple recipe that your students can help with, such as this one from Food Network. Not only will they have fun making the dumplings, but they’ll also get to eat them afterwards! Yum!
  4. Learn some Mandarin phrases! Mandarin is the most common language spoken in China. Here’s a free count to 10 in Mandarin activity
    • Have your students look up some basic phrases such as “Happy New Year” or “What is your name?” and practice saying them aloud. They can even write them down in their own personal journals to refer back to later.

  5. Listen to traditional music! Traditional Chinese music is very different from the music we typically listen to in the Western world.
    • Play some traditional Chinese music for your students and encourage them to close their eyes and imagine what it would be like to be celebrating Chinese New Year in China. You can find some great songs here.
