Black History Month is a great opportunity to educate students about the contributions made by African Americans throughout history. Here’s a Black History Month project to incorporate in your middle or high school social studies class. This project will help students learn more about famous Black inventors and how they improved people’s lives with their inventions.

The History of Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of African American culture and heritage. Learn more about its origins and why it’s important to teach it! It was first celebrated in February 1926 by Carter G Woodson, who wanted to create a national holiday to honor the contributions of African Americans. Black History Month takes place in February to celebrate the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

Black History Month Project: A Flipbook on Famous Black Inventors

Students will research famous African American inventors with this flipbook project! You can either let your students choose a famous African American inventor to research or assign them one.

This scaffolded flipbook is great for helping all students access grade level content! Students will research inventors like Sarah Boone, Garrett Morgan, Alexander Miles, Lewis Latimer, Patricia Bath, George Washington Carver, and more with this fun and engaging project!

Students will research a Black inventor and answer questions in the flipbook about the inventor and their invention. Students will research the inventor’s most famous invention, their birth place, childhood, and more.

You can extend this Black History Month project by adding a jigsaw activity. Put students in groups where every student has a different inventor. Then they share their flipbook and the other students in the group will complete a chart about the other inventors.
